Port Hills Park Trust

Who we are

Port Hills Park Trust is the organisation that administers Mt Vernon Park on behalf of the people of Christchurch. The main aims are to manage the park for conservation and recreation purposes. The trust meets approximately every 6 weeks. There is a small maintenance group that meets every Thursday to do minor general maintenance and there are normally a few larger working bees such as planting days every year.

The Park was purchased for the people of Canterbury in 1985 and is managed by volunteers for conservation and low impact recreation including walking, mountain biking, climbing, bird watching, geocaching and photography.

The park covers 235 hectares of the Christchurch Port Hills. It is bounded by the on the east by the popular Rapaki Track and on the west by Huntsbury Spur. It rises from the city urban edge right to the 462m high summit of Mt Vernon.
